WTEN: Zags Battle in Day Two of the Gonzaga Hidden Duel Tournament

Gonzaga honored Sophie Whittle prior to today's start

SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Gonzaga women's tennis team continued their performance today in the Gonzaga Hidden Duel tournament. This is the first of two tournaments the Zags will play at the Steven Center this fall. The other fall home tournament will be the Gonzaga Invitational, which runs from October 28th to October 30th.

Before today's competition began, a ceremony was held to celebrate Gonzaga women's tennis legend Sophie Whittle. Playing for the Zags from 2015 to 2019, Whittle leads Gonzaga in overall wins, tournament wins, and was a WCC First Team selection in both 2018 and 2019. After a fall season that featured an ITA National Championship in singles, Whittle was ranked No. 1 in the nation and went on to remain in the top 15 throughout the spring. She capped her successful career at GU by being named an Intercollegiate Tennis Singles All-American, the school's first-ever in the sport in 2019. A banner listing Whittle's accomplishments and accolades can now be found in the above Court One in the Stevens Center.

On court one, Gonzaga's Cate Broerman earned an impressive comeback victory against New Mexico's Katherine Jhang by the score of 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. In another back-and-forth match, New Mexico's Hsuan Huang earned a 0-6, 6-4, 6-3 court three win over Gonzaga's Jenna Sloan. In the final singles match for Gonzaga, New Mexico's Maria Sodre earned a close 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 win over Gonzaga's Maria Frampton in spot No.6.

Gonzaga continued to battle as they faced Washington State University in the doubles competition.
