STANFORD, Calif. -- Earlier this afternoon, the Gonzaga women's tennis team opened their participation at the ITA Regionals. This is the third consecutive season the Zags have performed in the tournament, with former Zags Adrianna Sosnowska and Cate Broerman having advanced to the Round of 16 of the Doubles Main Draw last season.
Opening with the Main Draw of the doubles competition, Gonzaga's Emily Robertson and Kianna Oda battled, but dropped their match against Stanford's Alexis Blokhina and Katherine Hui by a score of 8-7. Shortly after, Gonzaga's Lia Espinal and Caroline Wernli were defeated 8-4 by Washington's Erika Matsuda and Dariya Detkovskaya. Closing today's doubles competition was Gonzaga's Ella Nielsen and Rose Hayes, who lost to San Jose State's Cheuk Ying Shek and Rozalina Youseva by a score of 8-4.
In the Single Main Draw, Wernli fell to Sacramento State's Warisara Lee by a score of 7-5, 7-5. Oda also lost, dropping her match to Sacramento State's Irene Riva by a score of 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. UC Davis's Arianna Stavropoulos picked up a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 win against Gonzaga's Tiegan Aitken.
Facing Seattle's Elena Kraleva, Espinal lost by a score of 4-6, 6-3, 6-0. Robertson battled in her singles match, but was narrowly defeated by San Jose State's Carolina Millan by a score of 5-7, 6-2, 7-6. Hayes lost to UC Berkeley's Berta Passola Folch 6-1, 7-6. Closing today's action was Nielsen, who lost to Shek by a score of 6-3, 6-2.
