EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Earlier this afternoon, the Gonzaga women's tennis team competed on the first day of the Michigan State Hidden Dual. This marks the first time in recorded history that the Zags have performed at the Michigan State Hidden Dual, last playing the Spartans during the 2020 season.
The Zags played against a tough Michigan State squad in the singles competition. Gonzaga's
Emily Robertson clinched a comeback victory, defeating Michigan State's Liisa Vehvilainen by a score of 1-6, 6-2, 6-4. Shortly after, Gonzaga's
Kianna Oda earned a 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory against Michigan State's Matilde Morais. Gonzaga's
Tiegan Aitken also battled, losing 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 against Michigan State's Marley Lambert. Facing Michigan State's Ria Bhakta, Gonzaga's
Caroline Wernli lost 6-1, 6-0 in straight sets.
Three other Zags also performed in singles matches. Playing against Michigan State's Nicole Conard, Gonzaga's
Lia Espinal lost by a score of 6-4, 6-1. Gonzaga's
Rose Hayes lost 6-4, 6-0 against Michigan State's Issey Purser. In the final singles match, Gonzaga's
Ella Nielsen battled, but was defeated 6-3, 6-1 by Michigan State's Natalie Stasny.
Facing Toledo in the doubles competition, Oda and Robertson clinched a 7-5 win against Toledo's Sanjana Tallamraju and Julia Kuszynski. Battling Toledo's Cassie Alcala and Gaby Rondon, Nielsen and Aitken lost by a score of 6-2. Hayes and Wernli also lost 7-6 to Toledo's Audrey Moutama and Tallamraju.
The Zags also performed in additional doubles matches against Ball State. Oda and Robertson dominated, winning 6-1 against Ball State's Annika Planinsek and Sydney Hrehor. The Zags picked up another victory when Aitken and Nielsen claimed a 6-4 win over Ball State's Elena Malykh and Ella Hazelbaker. In the final doubles match, Hayes and Espinal lost 6-3 to Ball State's Isabele Tanjuatco and Sarah Shahbaz.
