SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Nine Gonzaga cross country runners earned West Coast Conference All-Academic honors, the league announced on Friday. The men's squad earned four nods, while the women earned five, led by
Alicia Anderson's second consecutive First Team selection and third straight selection overall.
At the conclusion of each athletic season, the WCC selects an all-academic squad for each WCC-sponsored sport. To be considered, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, while also being a significant contributor to his team and in at least their second year at their school.
Anderson, a Business Administration graduate student who holds a 4.0 GPA, is a 2x NCAA Qualifier on the track. This fall, she notched the program tenth-best 6K time at the Bronco Invitational in Sunnyvale, Calif., placing 14th to help secure a team title for the Zags. Anderson just missed an All-WCC honor, placing 19th at the West Coast Conference Championships in Malibu, helping GU to a second place finish.
Alexi Fogo also earned a First Team academic honor, currently holding a perfect 4.0 GPA in Biology. The junior from Goodfield, Ill. notched personal bests in both the 4K and 6K this season, becoming a consistent point-scorer for the Zags after an 18th place finish at the Waves Invitational and 17th place finishes at both the Bronco Invitational and West Coast Conference Championships.
Sadie Tuckwood, also a Biology major, touts a 3.33 GPA an earns her first All-Academic nod. The Alaska-native also earned PRs in both the 4K and 6K this season with top ten finishes in both (seventh at the Waves Invitational and third at the Bronco Invitational). Tuckwood's new 6K time is third all-time in GU program history, adding to three track PRs already among the program records.
On the men's side,
Cooper Laird earned his first All-Academic First Team honor with a 3.94 GPA in Psychology. Laird is a two-time NCAA 3K Steeplechase Qualifier on the track, and bested both his 6K and 10K this fall. Big finishes at the Griak Invitational, West Coast Conference Championships, and NCAA West Regionals highlighted a successful season for the redshirt junior.
In addition to the First Team selections, five Bulldog runners earned honorable mention nods, including
Anna Grabowski (3.94, Undeclared Business),
Brittney Hansen (3.9, Organizational Leadership),
Wil Smith (3.23, Human Physiology),
Paul Talens (3.25, Civil Engineering), and
Ansel Tucker (3.72, English).
