SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga baseball's West Coast Conference series opener with San Diego on April 6 will be televised nationally on ESPNU, the West Coast Conference announced Tuesday.
The start time for the game against the Toreros at GU's Patterson Baseball Complex has been shifted to 8 p.m. (PST).
GU is coming off a program-best No. 10 ranking and its second straight year with a win in the NCAA Tournament in 2022 — the first time in program history the Zags have done so under the current format — after appearing as a #2 seed in the 2022 Blacksburg Regional. The Bulldogs were eliminated by #3-seed Columbia in Game Three after rallying to eliminate #4-seed Wright State in Game Two. The Zags are defending WCC Regular Season Champions for the second straight season.
The Bulldogs lost four members of an elite pitching staff that finished 10th in the nation in shutouts (6) and ninth in strikeouts per nine innings (10.6) to the 2022 MLB Draft, but return All-Blacksburg Regional and Collegiate Baseball Preseason All-American RHP Owen Wild (3.03 ERA, 9-1 in 2022) as well as five of their top six hitters by average, including a pair of Freshman All-Americans in WCC Freshman of the Year Cade McGee and Enzo Apodaca as well as WCC Defensive Player of the Year Connor Coballes.
The Bulldogs and Toreros have gone 1-2 in the conference standings the last two seasons, with USD winning the 2023 WCC Tournament in Stockton, Calif. last June to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Toreros will be one of six 2023 NCAA Regional teams GU will face during the regular season in 2023.
The Zags open the season Feb. 17 with a four-game series against Texas Tech at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
