MISSION BAY Calif. – The Gonzaga men's rowing team traveled to California and took first and second with two boats competing at the San Diego Crew Classic on day one. The field included UCLA, UC Davis, California, UC San Diego, San Diego State, UC Santa Barbara, and Colorado.
"Both boats raced well today and are in the grand finals tomorrow," head coach Dan Gehn said.
In the 1V8 Men's Collegiate Varsity Cal Cup race, the Zags took first place with a time of 6:25.473. Taking second was UCLA at 6:34.710 and taking third was UC Davis at 6:39.114. UC Santa Barbara, Colorado and San Diego State followed behind them to wrap up the race. With this first-place win, the Zags qualify to race again tomorrow.
During the Men's Collegiate Sharp Memorial Cup Heat 2V8 race, the Zags placed second with a time of 6:30.755 behind first place California at 6:25.741. UC San Diego came in third at 6:35.597 while UCLA and UC Davis followed behind.
The Bulldogs 1V8 boat advanced and will now compete tomorrow in the Cal Cup Final at 10:21:00 against seven other top boats from today's races. The 2V8 boat also advances to the finals to compete in the Sharp Cup at 10:42 a.m.
