SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The West Coast Conference has announced its Baseball All-Academic Team for the 2023 season, with
Owen Wild and
Ezra Samperi both earning All-Academic First Team honors and eight other Zags making the honorable mention list.
At the conclusion of each athletic season, the WCC selects an all-academic squad for each WCC-sponsored sport. To be considered, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, while also being a significant contributor to his team and in at least their second year at their school. This year's 13-member first team encompasses WCC student-athletes who excelled both on the diamond and in the classroom.
Majoring in Kinesiology with a 3.98 cumulative GPA since joining the Bulldogs last season, Samperi was named the department-wide Gonzaga Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year for 2022-23 in recognition of his academic accomplishments and College Sports Communicators Academic All-District. He has accumulated an impressive academic resume in just two years, making the President's List each semester, earning an WCC All-Academic First Team nod last season and becoming a member of Chi Alpha Sigma student-athlete honors society this year. He started 39 games at catcher for GU this season, driving in 16 runs with nine extra base hits in that span.
Wild, the Zags' Friday night starter all season and a WCC Pitcher of the Week honoree, was also named to the All-Academic team after posting a cumulative 3.68 GPA in Mechanical Engineering. The junior righty led GU's staff in innings pitched (95.0) and strikeouts (105) in a team-high 15 starts.
Enzo Apodaca (3.65, Sports Management),
Brock Bozett (3.49, Sports Management),
Connor Coballes (3.60, Sports Management),
Dylan Johnson (3.67, Business Administration MA),
Mason Marenco (3.60, Business Administration MA),
Bradley Mullan (3.66, Criminology; Political Science),
Jacob Rutherford (3.4, Human Physiology) and
Grayson Sterling (3.78, Psychology; Economics) rounded out the rest of GU's representatives on the honorable mention list, with all but Bozett and Rutherford earning Academic All-Conference honors for the second year in a row.
