Brian Kalmer Selected on Third Day of MLB Draft

Chicago Cubs select Kalmer in the 18th round; 536th pick

SEATTLE, Wash. – Gonzaga INF Brian Kalmer became the second Zag selected in the 2023 MLB draft when the Chicago Cubs took him with the 536th overall pick in the 18th Round on Tuesday.

Kalmer was named First Team All-WCC in 2023 where he finished third in the conference in RBIs with 51 and fifth in batting average, hitting .358. He led the Zags in 12 hitting categories during his 2023 campaign while placing himself fifth all-time in single season home runs (15) and joining three former Zags to have hit three home runs in one game when he did so on Mar. 5 against Tennessee.

Prior to Gonzaga, Kalmer was a standout at Wasbash Valley College, where he was named NJCAA D1 National Player of the Year after batting .421 in 2022. During that season, the 6-2 Arizona native hit 20 homers, scored 75 runs, and collected 109 RBIs, leading all NJCAA D1 in hits and RBIs.

Kalmer joins teammate Owen Wild, who was selected in the Seventh Round on Monday by the Tampa Bay Rays.
