WTEN: Zags Fall to No. 22 Washington, 7-0

SEATTLE, Wash. --  The Gonzaga women's tennis team continued their nonconference spring schedule by playing the University of Washington earlier this afternoon. Today's action marks the sixth historical matchup between the Zags and Huskies, with the last match occurring during the 2020-21 season.
 
Opening with the doubles competition, Washington's Erika Matsuda and Sarah-Maude Fortin claimed an early victory, defeating Gonzaga's Tiegan Aitken and Ella Nielsen by a score of 6-1 on court two. The Huskies clinched the doubles point when Melissa Sakar and Dariya Detkovskaya earned a 6-1 win over Gonzaga's Lia Espinal and Brooke Bittner in the No.3 spot.
 
With Washington having already clinched the doubles competition, the court one match between Gonzaga's Emily Robertson and Kianna Oda and Washington's Alexia Jacobs and Astrid Olsen went unfinished, ending with a score of 2-5.
 
Shifting to the singles competition, Washington expanded their lead when Olsen earned a 6-1, 6-0 court three victory against Aitken. In the No.6 spot, Detkovskaya defeated Espinal by a score of 6-1, 6-2. Washington clinched the team victory when Sakar picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win against Nielsen
 
Gonzaga continued to battle through the remaining three singles matches. On court one, Matsuda defeated Robertson by a score of 6-1, 6-1. Later on, Oda battled, but lost her court two match against Jacobs by a score of 6-0, 3-6, 7-5. In the final match of the day, Fortin secured a 6-1, 6-7, 10-7 win over Gonzaga's Caroline Wernli on court five.
 
Up Next: Following today's match, the Gonzaga women's tennis team will begin preparation to face the University of New Mexico, which is scheduled for February 10th at 12 pm in the Steven Center.

Records: Today's match shifts the season record for Gonzaga to 2-2. For Washington, their record improves to 4-0 on the year with the victory. The historical record between the Zags and Huskies also moves to 0-6 following today's result.
