SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga baseball head coach
Mark Machtolf announced the 50-game 2024 schedule for the Zags on Tuesday. Their spring slate includes 18 games at
Patterson Baseball Complex and Coach Steve Hertz Field and eight games against teams who participated in the 2023 NCAA Tournament. The Zags will face 21 opponents in 2024, 12 of which finished in the Top 150 in the NCAA's final RPI rankings from 2023. Most notably, GU's second opponent, Vanderbilt, finished seventh in those final rankings before hosting the Nashville Regional of the NCAA Tournament.
"This schedule provides a great opportunity for our players to play on some big stages, and also help prepare us to compete for a WCC title," Machtolf said.
Amidst the West Coast Conference portion of their schedule, GU will also see notable mid-week matchups against familiar Pac-12 opponents Washington, Washington State, Oregon, and Oregon State. New to this year's slate is a single-game matchup against Southern California on May 14.
For the first time since 2016, the Bulldogs will not travel to Arizona for late-February games. In prior seasons, GU has participated in the Sanderson Ford Classic and the Surprise Classic in Surprise, Ariz. After a four-game series at Texas Tech to open their 2023 season, Gonzaga played four games at Grand Canyon's Brazell Field in Phoenix, including two against GCU and two neutral-site matchups against Ohio State. Additionally in 2024, the Zags will not play in any neutral-site games during the regular season for the first time in over 20 years.
Gonzaga opens their season Feb. 16-18 in Los Angeles, Calif. against Pac-12 foe UCLA at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The Bulldogs and Bruins will face off for the first time since the 2018 NCAA Minneapolis Regional. UCLA went 28-24-1 in 2023 and finished seventh in a Pac-12 Conference that saw four teams advance to the NCAA Regionals. GU travels to Nashville, Tenn. next for a premier three-game series against Vanderbilt on Feb. 23-25. The Zags and Commodores will square off for the first time in program history. Vanderbilt went 42-20 and finished second in the SEC in 2023 before falling out of the Nashville Regional. Gonzaga remains in Tennessee for one more day to face Austin Peay on Feb. 26 in Clarksville, their first-ever matchup.
Next, on Feb. 29-March 2, the Zags travel to now-Big 12 member BYU for a three-game series in Provo, Utah. Gonzaga is 36-28 all-time against the Cougars, who finished seventh in the WCC in 2023 after a 24-28 season. A single-game stint at Utah Valley wraps up their trip to Utah before returning to Spokane for the 2024 home opener.
On March 7-9, GU opens their 18-game home schedule against Minnesota. The Golden Gophers will complete the home-and-home after the Bulldogs traveled to Minneapolis in 2023. While Gonzaga and Minnesota share a 4-4 head-to-head record, this will be the first-ever meeting in Spokane. After a stop in Edwardsville, Ill. for one game at SIU Edwardsville, the Zags travel to Wichita, Kan. to face Wichita State for the first time in program history on March 15-17. The Shockers completed 2023 with a 30-25 record after finishing third in the American Athletic Conference.
Gonzaga's 2024 West Coast Conference Schedule kicks off on March 22-24 when reigning WCC Regular Season Champion Loyola Marymount comes to town. A trip to Moraga, Calif. for a series at Saint Mary's is next on March 28-30. The Bulldogs are 60-43 all-time against the Gaels, who finished fifth in the WCC last season. After that, a stop in Corvallis awaits the Zags for two games against Oregon State on April 1-2, marking their 111th and 112th all-time meetings dating back to 1919. Only Portland, Washington, and Washington State have more head-to-head meetings with GU.
The Zags return home on April 5-7 to face Santa Clara, who was the lone WCC representative in the NCAA Tournament in 2023 after winning the conference tournament. GU remains at home on April 9 for their first matchup against Washington State before heading to San Francisco on April 12-14 and then Eugene to face Oregon on April 16. Despite finishing sixth in the Pac-12 last season, the Ducks advanced through the Regional round of the NCAA Tournament before being eliminated in the Super Regional round.
After a series at home against Portland on April 19-21, Gonzaga hits their final regular season road stretch on April 23 against Washington State in Pullman, before a weekend series at San Diego on April 26-28. A trip to Seattle to take on Washington is next on April 30. The Huskies finished third in the Pac-12 in 2023 before being eliminated in the Stillwater Regional. The Zags' final regular season road trip takes them to Stockton, Calif. to face Pacific on May 3-5. GU is 31-9 all-time against the Tigers after picking up a three-game sweep last season in Spokane.
Gonzaga hosts Oregon State on May 6 in their third and final meeting of the 2024 regular season. Next, Southern California comes to town for a single-game matchup on May 14, as the Zags and Trojans are set to square off for the first time since 1989. GU closes out the regular season against Pepperdine on May 16-18, with the West Coast Conference Tournament set for May 22-25 in Las Vegas, Nev at Las Vegas Ballpark.
