SEATTLE- Gonzaga Volleyball (14-12, 7-8) defeated the Seattle Red Hawks (7-19,1-14) in four sets on Thursday night, setting the tone via several huge scoring runs throughout the match.
Gonzaga split the first two sets by scores of 28-26 and 22-25 before dominating the third with a huge 25-9 margin. GU won the match after capturing the fourth set by a sizeable 25-16 scoreline.
The Zags opened the game with a 6-0 run to open up the first set, setting the precedent for the rest of the game. Every single Zag on the court each scored a point in that run, showing that the Bulldogs have scoring depth that can show up anywhere in the rotation on any given night.
Despite hitting a huge .353 in the second set, the Zags dropped the second frame to the Red Hawks. Seattle had their best offensive set of the game in the second, scoring 18 kills. Seattle's Petra Fritz led the match with 20 kills.
The entire tone of the game changed when GU started putting together huge runs to capture the third set. The Zags secured the third behind a huge 9-0 run which featured back to back blocks by Taylor Walsh and Autumn Larson and two aces by Kate Herrick. Herrick ended the game with four aces. Gonzaga went onto score separate 6-0 and 5-0 runs later in the set to dominate the third. This was the second time all year that Zags held an opponent to under 10 points in a set.
The Zags kept the runs going in the fourth, going on yet another 5-0 run to jump out to an insurmountable lead. Gonzaga hit an impressive .345 on the night while scoring 12 aces. Three different Zags had double digit kills, with Sjakkie Donkers scoring 13 kills and Autumn Larson adding another 11. Raechelle Dykstra had a double double with 12 kills and a game high 13 digs, while Dani Johnson added nine kills while hitting an incredibly efficient .643. The Zags went on five separate runs of at least 5-0 to easily take the match.
Zag Volleyball returns home for the final home match of the season, taking on Portland at noon on Saturday for Senior Day.
