LOWELL, Ore. – Gonzaga women's rowing began its spring slate on Saturday at the Dexter Lake Invite, earning victories in three races and placing second in the others. Hosted by Oregon State, the regatta also included crews from Portland.
The Bulldogs, who entered the Spring season ranked 21st in the country, won the opening two races of the day — each by about seven seconds.
Up first were the OSU and GU third and fourth varsity fours, with the Zags finishing in first (7:52.2) and third (8:04.03), respectively. The Beaver boats crossed the line at 7:59.57 and 8:19.34.
Pacing the next heat with a time of 7:44.60, the 2V4+ finished ahead of OSU (7:51.35) and UP (8:32.36).
Gonzaga placed second in the next three races of the day — the first and second varsity eights, as well as the varsity fours — each won by OSU.
In the 1V4+, the Bulldogs (7:50.01) finished behind OSU (7:39.90) and 18 seconds ahead of UP. The second varsity eights (6:49.68) were just five seconds behind OSU and well in front of UP (7:11.32). In the 1V8+, Gonzaga (6:35.14) finished behind the Beavers (6:28.60) and 22 seconds ahead of the Pilots.
A 3V8+ and 4/5V8+ race concluded the regatta, with Gonzaga placing first (7:04.30) and third (7:22.34). OSU's second-place time was 7:12.69, while UP crossed the tape at 8:04.40.
UP NEXT: The Bulldogs host Washington State on Saturday, April 12 at Silver Lake. The Varsity 8 competition will serve as this year's Fawley Cup race, with an award presented to the first-place finisher.
