SPOKANE, Wash.- Gonzaga Baseball (20-14, 9-3 WCC) rallied in the eighth inning to secure a series sweep over Portland (20-13, 6-6 WCC) with a 12-11 win on Sunday.
The Zags had four home runs, with three of them coming in the fourth inning. Tommy Eisenstat had an exhilarating inside the park home run in the second inning to get the offense going.
Mikey Bell was perfect at the plate today, putting up five hits for the second time this series. Bell tied the program record for hits in a game in two of the three games this weekend. He ended today with a home run, a double, four RBIs and three runs.
Ryder Young originally came around to score in the first inning after getting hit by pitch, opening the scoring. Eisenstat's home run kicked off the second inning, while Bo Shinkle and Ricky Sanchez each added a run in the same frame after the Zags put up five hits in the inning.
Portland responded with their only run scored on starter Finbar O'Brien when they scored in the top of the third on back to back singles. O'Brien had a season high six strikeouts today.
The Zags had their best inning of the game in the fourth, with Bell driving in Sanchez on his home run before Ryder Young immediately followed up with a dinger of his own. Bell's home run was listed as going for 443 feet and landed outside of the stadium on Cincinnati Street. Hudson Shupe homered to right field to give GU the fourth run of the inning. Each team scored a run in the sixth to keep the deficit level.
Portland retook the lead in the seventh with an eight run inning. Gonzaga gave up four walks in the inning to allow the Pilots to take advantage of the free passes. GU gave up 13 walks today, tied for the second most in a single game ever played at Patterson Baseball Complex.
The Zags rallied from the rough inning to score three runs in the bottom of the seventh to wrest back control of the lead. Bell had a clutch RBI to score Sanchez, who had reached base on a walk. GU had not drawn a walk until the seventh inning. Young then also drew a walk, loading the bases for Maddox Haley to bring in two runs with an RBI single. Zach Bowman closed out the lead to capture his second save of the season.
The Zags secured their second weekend series sweep of the year and their fifth straight weekend series win. Gonzaga is now 15-3 in their last eighteen games. GU remains tied for first atop the WCC. Â The bulldogs will take several days off before traveling to Saint Mary's for a weekend series starting at 3pm on Friday.
