SPOKANE, Wash.- Head Coach Mark Machtolf secured his 638th win on Saturday, putting him atop the record book as the all time leader in wins as a Gonzaga Baseball head coach.
Machtolf, the head coach at Gonzaga since 2004, is now the winningest coach of all time in program history with a 638-542-2 record. Machtolf passed former coach Steve Hertz, who was the GU coach for 24 seasons, for the wins record. Hertz originally gave Machtolf his start in college baseball, hiring him as an assistant coach upon Machtolf's graduation from Stanford in 1987. A five time WCC coach of the year, Machtolf has coached players to 143 All-WCC selections, 55 MLB draft picks, and 11 All-West Region recognitions. The Zags have made five NCAA Tournament appearances under Machtolf's direction.
The Zags secured the record-breaking win with a 4-3 home win over Pepperdine on Saturday, moving Gonzaga to tied for second in the WCC with a 6-3 conference record.
Karsten Sweum had a great start for GU, throwing for 5.2 innings and only allowing two runs while picking up the win. Sweum struck out a career high eight batters. Erik Hoffberg closed out the game with 3.1 innings, allowing just one run on two hits. Hoffberg threw four strikeouts with securing the save. Hoffberg is eighth in all time career saves at Gonzaga after picking up his 13th career save. He is now one save away from tying current Seattle Mariner Casey Legumina for the sixth most career saves by a GU pitcher.
Each team opened the game with a run in the first inning, with both sides getting a runner on base with a double before driving them in with two outs. The Zags added another run in the second inning as back to back doubles from Tommy Eisenstat and Noah Meffert gave the Bulldogs the lead.
The Waves tied the game in the top of the fourth, but Meffert hit a solo home run to deep left field to give GU the lead again. Meffert had three hits today and was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. Gonzaga added another run in the sixth inning, as Eisenstat hit his second double of the game to drive in Ryder Young. The great outing from the two Zag pitchers worked to close out the game in the final innings.
The Zags will take on a cross-state showdown in the midweek, traveling to Seattle take on Washington on Monday and Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 5pm on Monday.
