Malibu, Calif. - After a hectic week in which Gonzaga University and Pepperdine University had to flip-flop their West Coast Conference series due to threatening weather in the Spokane area, Pepperdine (8-5, 1-0 WCC) took advantage of the road weary Bulldogs (4-7, 0-1 WCC) with an 8-0 victory over Gonzaga at Eddy D. Field Stadium in Malibu.
Waves starting pitcher Brandon Boesch (3-1) scattered just two Bulldogs hits on the afternoon as he pitched a complete game shutout against a Gonzaga offense that was averaging 6.3 runs per game through its opening 10 ballgames. Boesch allowed just two Gonzaga singles to David Johnson and Danny Evans as he had only four Zags reach base all afternoon. Chris Sinner and Jeff Culpepper drew walks from the Waves starter. It marked the first time since the second game of the 2001 WCC Championship series that the Bulldogs had been shutout, that loss was also against Pepperdine in Malibu.
After struggling through the opening three innings against Bulldogs starter Errol Simonitsch (2-2), the Waves were able to push across the games first run in the bottom of the fourth as David Uribes led off with a double to left center. Uribes would come around to score on a double down the left line by Cory Brightwell.
Pepperdine would touch up Simonitsch for two more runs in the fifth and four in the sixth which chased the Bulldogs starter from the contest. Uribes had big hits in the fifth and sixth as his two singles accounted for four Waves runs. Brandon Daguio and Kevin Estrada each had RBI's in the sixth.
Gonzaga relief pitcher Patrick Donovan worked 1.1 innings of relief for Simonitsch before giving way to Matt Reding in the eighth. Nelson Caraballo had a solo homer in the eighth to finish off Pepperdine's scoring.
Uribes finished 3-for-4 with 4 RBI to lead Pepperdine while Cory Brightwell also had two hits. The two teams will conclude their WCC series with a double-header on Saturday afternoon in Malibu. Start time is 11 a.m. at Eddy D. Field Stadium. Following those two games Gonzaga will travel on Sunday to Fresno, Calif., to compete in the Pepsi/Johnny Quik Baseball Classic. The Bulldogs open play in the six-day tournament on Monday afternoon with a 1 p.m. game against Bowling Green State University.
