SPOKANE, Wash. - On a windy and overcast day in Spokane, the Gonzaga University men's tennis team was able to push aside a 14-match losing skid as the Bulldogs knocked off Eastern Washington University 6-1 at Martin Courts on the Gonzaga campus. The Bulldogs won two of three in the doubles action before winning five of six singles matches to improve to 5-17 on the season. Gonzaga will host Lewis-Clark State College on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. at Martin Courts before heading to the West Coast Conference championships on April 23-25 in Santa Clara, Calif.
Gonzaga jumped out to an early lead in doubles action as Bryce Cooper and Brett Womack won the No. 1 doubles match against Mike Mosback and Aaron Heier by a score of 8-4. The Bulldogs No. 2 doubles pair of Dru Ernst and Reid Arthur put the doubles point away with a 9-7 win over Kevin Erickson and Anthony Venable. The Eagles were able to capture the third doubles match with Brandon Hair and Eric Eggers knocking off Robert Penney and Jesse Goldsmith, 8-6.
In singles competition, Cooper and Ernst easily won their matches at No.1 and No. 3 with Cooper knocking off Erickson 6-1, 6-1, and Ernst defeating Shane Caskey 6-2, 6-2. Womack held on for the Zags point at No. 2 singles with a 6-4, 7-6 victory over Heier which put the victory in Gonzaga's hands. Arthur then knocked off Venable at No. 4 singles 7-5, 6-2 with Penney winning singles action in the No. 5 slot 5-7, 6-4, 11-9. The players played the final set to 10 points declaring a winner by two points once the match overall team match had already been decided. Eastern Washington picked up its lone win in No. 6 singles action with Eggers winning over Goldsmith 6-3, 6-4.
