Zags Lose In Opening Round Of WCC Championships

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Gonzaga University women's tennis team was swept, 5-0, by the No. 1 seed in the first round of the West Coast Conference Championships on Friday in San Diego, Calif. The Bulldogs fell to 8-14 with the loss to Pepperdine University. Gonzaga will turn around and play the No. 4 seed Santa Clara University on Saturday, April 23 at 9 a.m.

The Waves took care of doubles play early as Sylvia Kosakowski and Caroline Raba defeated Angela Fry and Sirrah Williams, then Merve Asimgil and Vanessa Dunlap clamed the point with an 8-1 win over Erin Humphrey and Sydney Lederhouse. According to tournament rules, the No. 2 doubles match was suspended between Pepperdine duo Eva Dickes and Bianca Dulgheru and Gonzaga tandem Kendall Bates and Amanda Becker.

Pepperdine took care of singles play as well, claiming the four points for the win. Raba defeated Fry in the No. 1 spot (6-2, 6-1), Dulgheru defeated Becker at No. 2 (6-1, 6-1), Sylvia Kosakowski defeated Bates at No. 3 (6-1, 6-2) and Eva Dickes defeated Sirrah Williams at No. 4 (6-0, 6-0) for the win. Humphrey left her match unfinished and Lederhouse didn't finish her match due to tournament rules.
