SURPRISE, Ariz. - Freshman designated hitter Ryan Wiegand looped a two-run single into left-centerfield with one out in the bottom of the ninth as the Gonzaga University Bulldogs (6-1) rallied for a 6-5 win over No. 2 Oregon State University (2-1) in the championship game of the Coca-Cola Baseball Classic in Surprise, Ariz. Gonzaga finished the weekend 3-0, winning its sixth straight game and second straight season opening tournament. The Bulldogs have now knocked off two of last year's College World Series participants to open the year.
Gonzaga led 4-3 heading into the top of the ninth inning when the Beavers Geoff Wagner belted a two-run homer to give OSU the lead. Josh Monroe allowed the shot but picked the win with three innings of relief during his first action of the year. Bobby McEwen allowed OSU's three other runs during six solid innings of work.
Jackson Brennan started the Bulldogs one-out ninth inning rally when he was hit by a Kevin Gunderson (0-1) pitch. Brennan advanced to third on a Zach Woodward single to right with Woodward advancing to second on the throw to third. Wiegand followed with his game winning single that gave the Bulldogs their second straight win over OSU. Woodward led the Bulldogs at the plate going 3-for-5. Freshman catcher Tyson Van Winkle also had two hits for GU.
Oregon State opened the game strong taking a 3-1 lead after two innings. Gonzaga tied the game in the fourth scoring on a pair of wild pitches. Brennan delivered an RBI triple in the sixth to give the Bulldogs their first lead.
Gonzaga travels to New Mexico State University next weekend for a three game series with Aggies.
