Spokane, Wash. - Cody Martin set the Gonzaga University single season saves record Wednesday as the Bulldogs defeated two-time defending national champion Oregon State University 4-2 at Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field. The victory completed the Bulldogs' two-game sweep of the No. 23 Beavers.
Martin allowed one hit in one inning of work to earn his eighth save of the season, as the set the GU (27-18) single season record. Randy Bostic held the previous record of seven saves, set during the 1982 season. Martin had tied Bostic's record on April 12 against Santa Clara University.
Gonzaga reliever Brandon Harmon (2-6) earned the victory as the senior was the pitcher of record when the Bulldogs scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to take the victory. Oregon State's (20-16) Greg Peavey (2-2) suffered the loss, allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits over 4.1 innings of relief.
The Beavers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the third. Chris Hopkins reached base with one out on a two-base error before scoring on Gonzaga's second error the inning.
The Zags took a 2-1 edge in the bottom of the fourth thanks to one-run singles by Ryan Wiegand and Mark Castellitto. Evan Wells led off the inning drawing a base after being hit-by-a-pitch, before advancing the second on a passed ball. Jason Chatwood then singled to put runners on the corners, before Wiegand's single through the left side plated Wells and placed Chatwood at third. Following the first out of the inning, Castelitto then singled to right field, scoring Chatwood.
Drew George scored in the top of the seventh for Oregon State, knotting the score 2-2. George reached on an infield single and advanced to second on a stolen base, before he scored on a GU error.
In the Bulldogs half of the seventh, Drew Heid led off the inning with a mighty at-bat. With a full count, Heid fouled off five straight pitches before smashing a double to left field. Following two at-bats that resulted in outs, Grant Kveder singled to score Heid. On the same play, Kveder came around to score on a three-base throwing error by the Beavers, giving the Zags a 4-2 advantage.
Wiegand was the lone Zag to record multiple hits in the game, going 2-for-4 with a run batted in. Wells extended his current hit-streak to 18 games in the top of the seven with an infield single. Weigand, Heid and Chatwood each hit .500 during the two-game set with OSU.
Gonzaga will return to West Coast Conference play Friday when it welcomes the University of San Francisco to Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field. The three-game series will open Friday at 6:30 p.m. before games Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m.
