SPOKANE, Wash. - Three Gonzaga University golfers have been honored with national All-America Scholar honors.
Senior Derek Cheney and senior-to-be Kyle Huus from the men's team and junior-to-be Jessica Howe of the women's squad are the Bulldog honorees.
The men's All-America Scholars are selected by Cleveland Golf/Srixon and announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). A total of 119 players in Division I were honored. To be eligible for Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar status an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least two full years at the collegiate level, participate in 70-percent of his team's competitive rounds or compete in the NCAA Championships, have a stroke-average under 76.0 in Division I and maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
A total of 494 women's collegiate golfers in Division I, II and III were recognized by the National Golf Coaches Association of America (NGCA). The women's honorees must have a minimum cumulative GPA is 3.50 and student-athletes must have competed in at least 50 percent of a team's matches in Division I.
Cheney, from Richland, Wash., graduated with a 3.48 in marketing; Huus, a native of Sidney, Neb., carries a 3.71 in accounting, and Howe, who hails from Poway, Calif., has a 3.73 in business. Huus tied for 17th and Cheney tied for 21st in the West Coast Conference Championship, while Howe finished 24th on the women's side this past spring.
