Zags Ninth-Inning Rally Comes Up Short Against Beavers

FRESNO, Calif. - The Gonzaga University baseball team concluded the weekend in Fresno, Calif., with a 4-2 loss to Oregon State University Sunday. The Beavers (2-0) swept the Bulldogs (0-3) in the two-game series.

The Bulldogs, who were designated as the home team, used four pitchers. Starter Tyler Olson suffered the loss after going three innings and allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits. He walked six batters and struck out two. Aaron Brooks allowed two runs on three hits in 1 1/3 innings pitched. Billy Moon and Cody Martin went the rest of the way and combined for 4 2/3 shutout innings.

Six Bulldogs each produced a hit in the afternoon. Left fielder Royce Bolinger also drove in a run.

After the Beavers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning the Bulldogs got on the scoreboard in the second inning. Catcher Cameron Edman led off the inning reaching on a fielding error by shortstop Carter Bell. Designated hitter Maxx Garrett doubled down the left field line and two strikeouts later Bolinger hit a two-out RBI single through the left side to tie the game 1-1. Garrett made an attempt to give the Bulldogs the lead scoring from second but was called out at the plate.

The Beavers regained the lead in the third inning. A two-out bases-loaded single to center field by designated hitter Luke Acosta drove in catcher Andrew Susac. Center fielder Chris Sturdivant made a long throw home to hold Bell at third.

Oregon State would add a run in both the fourth and fifth innings to extend its lead to 4-1.

The Bulldogs made one final effort in the ninth inning. Pinch hitter Payden Cawley Lamb started the inning with a walk and advanced to third on a pinch-hit single to right field by Clayton Eslick. Second baseman Keegan Acker grounded into a double play but Cawley Lamb scored to cut the Beavers lead to two. Shortstop Steven Halcomb flied out to left field to end the game.

The Bulldogs will make the first of two trips to Texas next weekend for a three-game showdown against Texas A&M. The series starts Friday at 4:35 p.m. PT.
