SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Gonzaga University freshman Marco Gonzales was named West Coast Conference/Rawlings Pitcher of the Week Monday. This is Gonzales' second weekly accolade and Gonzaga's eighth, including Player of the Week honors.
Gonzales started two games last week and allowed only one earned run in 16 innings of work. Last Monday at the University of Portland he pitched a complete-game for the fourth time, striking out seven and surrendering two runs. He also went on to pinch hit late in the game, going 2-for-2 with a double and a run in the Bulldogs 5-2 come-from-behind win. Last Sunday at Pepperdine University he struck out eight and allowed three hits in seven frames to post a 5-0 combined shutout victory with teammate Cody Martin.
The native of Fort Collins, Colo., is 10-2 in 14 starts. His 10 wins are the most in the WCC and among starters he holds the best earned-run average in the league with a 2.34. His 78 strikeouts are second-most behind teammate Ryan Carpenter's 100.
The Bulldogs return home this weekend to host the University of San Francisco in the regular-season finale starting Friday at 6 p.m. The winner of the three-game series wins the WCC championship and receives the conference's automatic berth to the NCAA Baseball Championships.
