PROVO, Utah - Freshman Alvaro Nazal pulled an upset victory in singles play but the Gonzaga University men's tennis team lost a 6-1 decision to 45th-ranked BYU in a West Coast Conference match Friday.

After losing the first set 6-2, Nazal fought back and won the next two sets 6-2, 10-6 to beat 45th-ranked Georgy Batrakov at No. 1 singles and improve his singles record to 19-8.

The Bulldogs (8-8, 1-3 WCC) saw Scott Sullivan's nine-match winning singles streak come to an end. But the senior didn't go down without a fight. Sullivan won the first set of his No.6 singles match, but his opponent, Michael Eraso, came back and won the next two sets 7-5, 10-8 to snap Sullivan's nine-match winning streak.

The Cougars (12-7, 2-2 WCC) opened the match sweeping the Bulldogs in doubles competition before earning five wins in singles.

The Bulldogs will head to Southern California next weekend to wrap up their road schedule with two WCC matches. The Bulldogs will face Loyola Marymount University Friday at 1:30 p.m., followed by taking on eighth-ranked Pepperdine University Saturday at 11 a.m.
