Zag Baseball Signs Two to NLIs

SPOKANE, Wash.—The Gonzaga University baseball team inked two recruits to National Letters of Intent recently as Jordan Rathbone of Spokane and Justin Vernia of Renton have committed to play for the Bulldogs beginning in the 2016 season.

"We're excited adding Jordan and Justin to our team," said Gonzaga baseball head coach Mark Machtolf. "They'll be a big part of the team and will fill a couple big needs for us beginning in 2016."

Jordan Rathbone
C/OFSpokane, Wash/Gonzaga Prep

Rathbone is a standout two-sport athlete at Gonzaga Prep, playing both baseball and football. The Spokane native has twice earned First Team All-GSL honors, first receiving them as a sophomore for his outfield play. As a junior, Rathbone moved from the outfield to behind the plate to catcher and hit .433 with 20 RBIs, nine doubles, three triples, and three home runs; all in just 60 at-bats. Over this past summer, Rathbone participated in the Area Code Games held in Long Beach, Calif., competing against the nation's top high school players. He made the Kansas City team as a catcher. Jordan is ranked as the 12th-best prospect in the state of Washington by Perfect Game.

Coach Machtolf on Rathbone: "Jordan is an outstanding two-sport athlete with an outstanding skillset on the baseball diamond. He is a tireless worker and an All-American teammate. Jordan will primarily be used as a catcher for the Zags but could also compete for an outfield spot as well. We are very excited that Jordan has chosen Gonzaga and looking forward to him arriving to campus next Fall."

Justin Vernia
RHPRHP - Renton, Wash./Tacoma CC

Vernia comes to Gonzaga from Tacoma Community College, where he was the ace for the Titans as a freshman in 2014. He won each of his 11 starts, tallying an 11-0 record with a 1.19 ERA, tallying 59 strikeouts in 75.2 innings while allowing opponents to hit just .173. The Renton native led the Northwest Athletic Conference in wins, finished in top five in ERA and opponent batting average, and among the top 10 in strikeouts and innings pitched. Thanks to stellar season, he earned NWAC Western Region MVP and Frist Team All-NWAC from the conference and was named Second Team All-American by the American Baseball Coaches Association.

Coach Machtolf on Vernia: "We are thrilled that the top pitcher in the NWAC is coming to Gonzaga next year! Justin is a tremendous competitor and talent on the mound who will compete for a starting role for the 2016 Zags. Justin's demeanor and character defines Zag and looking forward to getting him in a Zag uniform in 2016."
