SPOKANE, Wash.—The Gonzaga University men's tennis squad will wrap up its four-tournament fall slate this weekend, competing at the tough PNW Intercollegiates, a tournament that features all Division I men's tennis team in Washington and Oregon, and one of the three from Idaho.
Gonzaga is well represented this year at the PNW Intercollegiates as five Zag teams or individuals are among the top three in their flights. Sergio Chip and Vladimir Mijatovic are both No. 1 seeds, headlining the third and fifth flights, respectively. Chip is coming off a highly-successful GU Fall Tournament where he won the Red Singles bracket, winning all ten sets en route to the title. Mijatovic was sidelined with an illness for much of the Fall Classic but has tallied a 3-3 singles record this fall.
Alvaro Nazal is the second seed in the top singles flight. The junior is on a roll individually, going 13-2 during three tournaments this fall and reaching at least the semifinals in each tournament. He and doubles partner Nick Kamisar are also seeded third in the top doubles bracket. Together they've gone 9-1, winning both the EWU Fall Classic and the GU Fall Tournament. In the sixth singles flight this weekend, Vicente Varas also earned a third seed after going 5-6 individually this fall.
Elsewhere in the tournament, Kamisar is the fourth seed in the No. 2 singles bracket, and Hayden Smith will make his season debut as the fourth seed in singles flight No. 4. In doubles play, Smith will team with Mijatovic to compete in the top doubles bracket while Chip and Varas will work in the second doubles flight.
Also appearing in the PNW Intercollegiates will be players from Boise State, Eastern Washington, Portland, Portland State, Oregon, Seattle U, and host school Washington.
Most recently Gonzaga hosted its own GU Fall Tournament Oct. 24-26, sweeping the main brackets of the competition with flight wins from Nazal, Chip, and Nazal/Kamisar. The Bulldogs had last weekend off from competition.
The PNW Intercollegiates will run Friday, Nov. 7 until Sunday, Nov. 9 at Central Park Tennis Club in Kirkland, Wash. Play will begin at 8:45 a.m. on Friday with the first rounds of the doubles competitions.
