Men's Tennis Falls At 48th-Ranked Pepperdine

MALIBU, Calif. - In the first of two road West Coast Conference matches over the weekend, the Gonzaga University men's tennis team went under 7-0 to the 48th-ranked Pepperdine University Waves at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center Friday.

The Bulldogs fall to 9-9 and 0-5 in conference play.

Pepperdine was victorious in the first two doubles matches to claim the first point of the day. As a result, the No. 3 contest between Nick Kamisar and Hayden Smith against Waves RJ Evangelista and Alexander Solonin went unfinished.

The first doubles match to finish was at No. 2 which saw the GU pair of Joey Brandt and Vladimir Mijatovic fall 8-4 to David Sofaer and Rakshay Thakkar.

The Waves also claimed the No. 1 match but the Zags made them earn it. Jack Schoebel and Muzeen Ismath were tasked with the 10th-ranked doubles team in the nation in Alex Sarkissian and Francis Alcantara. GU kept pace with the Waves duo but ultimately lost 8-6.

The Zags remained competitive in the singles matches but were unable to bring home a victory.

Kamisar faced 30th-ranked Sarkissian for a 6-2, 6-1 defeat. Smith put forth a strong effort at No. 2 where he was defeated 6-4, 6-2. Similar at No. 3, where Mijatovic's rally came up shy in the second set in a 6-1, 6-4 ousting to Sofaer.

Schoebel went down 6-4, 6-3 to Pedro Leme at No. 4; Ismath suffered a 6-1, 6-0 setback to Thakkar at No. 5; and Pablo Mosquera Pérez fell 6-0, 6-4 to Solonin.

The Zags weekend continues Saturday when the Bulldogs face Loyola Marymount for 11 a.m. dual.
