Morgan Named WCC Pitcher of the Week

April 11, 2016

SAN BRUNO, Calif.-Two days after his first career shutout, sophomore right-hander Eli Morgan earned his first career WCC/Rawlings Pitcher of the Week award Monday.

Morgan was dominant April 9 against Portland, going the distance against the Pilots while scattering four hits and striking out a career-high 11 batters. He took a no-hitter into the fifth inning and struck out the side in the sixth inning while adding two in both the second and fourth. The native of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., led the Zags to a 3-0 win over Portland Saturday, the closest game of a three-game Gonzaga sweep of the Pilots in Spokane.

The game was Morgan's fifth quality start in a row, and he picked up his fifth win of the year with the stellar outing. During that five-game quality start streak, he's lowered his ERA nearly six points from 9.77 to 3.95 and has pitched at least 7.0 innings in all five outings, including two complete games.

Morgan is the third Zag to receive a Player of the Week honor from the West Coast Conference. Fellow right-hander Brandon Bailey was Pitcher of the Week March 7 while senior first baseman Taylor Jones earned Player of the Week seven days later.

Morgan and the rest of the Bulldogs' baseball team will travel to San Francisco for a three-game series against the Dons in their newly-renovated ballpark. First pitch of the first game for that series is slated for 3:00 p.m. on Friday, April 15 at Benedetti Diamond.
