IRVINE, Calif. â€" The Gonzaga men's tennis team got strong performances from the top of its lineup and beat UC Irvine 4-0 on the road on Friday morning in Irvine, Calif.
The victory wraps up GU's three-game road trip with a 2-1 record against schools in southern California, and moves the Zags record to 6-4 on the season heading into West Coast Conference action. It was also GU's first-ever win over UC Irvine.
"Our guys came out to win this match today," head coach Peter MacDonald said. "You could feel the energy in the warmup, and all I can say is that we are really proud of this group. It's a program first, and a good way to go into WCC play.
Sophomore Ruadhan O'Sullivan followed up the GU doubles-point win with a victory over Sebastian Heim, who was ranked No. 113 entering the match. O'Sullivan doubled Heim up in the first 6-3, then finished it off with a 7-5 win.
Ronzai Saurombe and Vincent Rettke then followed with wins on court four and two to give GU the sweep. On court four, Saurombe beat Mason Hansen 6-0, 0-6, 6-2 in the second match to finish and Rettke topped Luca Marquard 6-3, 6-4 for the clinching point.
In doubles, the Zags earned victories on court one and three to win the point. On court one, O'Sullivan and Sam Feit took a 6-4 win over Hansen and Marquard, while Simon Homedes Dualde and Saurombe outlasted Vatsal Bajpai and Bruce Man-Son-Hing 7-6 for the victory.
GU will be back in action with the beginning of its WCC slate at San Francisco and Santa Clara next weekend. The Zags and Dons will face off on March 25 at 1 p.m., followed by a match against the Broncos the following day at 11 a.m.
