SEATTLE – The Gonzaga men's tennis team won three matches in both singles and doubles play on the first day of the ITA Northwest Regionals, hosted by Washington in Seattle.
"This was a solid first day for the guys," head men's tennis coach
Jonas Piibor said. "Two of our three doubles teams advanced to the round of 16, and three guys are still alive for us in singles play. I expect each guy to apply their game plans and get after it tomorrow."
Gonzaga opened the tournament with a strong showing in doubles.
Sam Feit and
Ruadhan O'Sullivan paired up to defeat Saint Mary's Abhishek Bastola and Daniel Krutik 8-6 in the round of 64, and the pair advanced to the round of 16 with an 8-4 win over Sacramento State's Mikus Losbergs and Dom Miller in the round of 32.
Gonzaga's
Hunter Egger and
Kyle Everly also picked up a win, defeating San Francisco's Phuc Huynh and Nitzan Ricklis 8-6 in the round of 64. The pair fell to Washington's Jack Davis and Piers Foley 8-3 in the round of 32.
Feit, O'Sullivan and
Emilio Moreno also picked up singles wins for the Bulldogs. Feit started things off with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Saint Mary's Brian Lee. Feit will face Sacramento State's Dom Miller Friday at 12:15 at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
O'Sullivan also grabbed a singles win for the Bulldogs; the senior defeated Mitchell Iwahiro of UC Davis 6-2, 7-6(4) to advance. O'Sullivan will face Santa Clara's Connor Garnett Friday at 1:15 at the Seattle Tennis Club.
Moreno rounded out the Zags' singles wins as the Mexicali, Mexico native bested San Francisco's David Woodland 6-2, 6-1. Moreno will face Washington's Ernesto Turegano Friday at 2 p.m. at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
Simon Homedes Dualde, who had a bye in the first round, will also play Friday; he is set to face Washington's Adam Torocsik at 11 a.m. at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
