SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga men's tennis team picked up multiple wins in both singles and doubles play on the first day of the Gonzaga Invitational at the Stevens Center. Two Bulldogs doubles teams advanced to the finals in their respective draws while six different Zags picked up wins in singles play.
"We showed a lot of improvements today in doubles play, which is an area that we have really focused on in the last few weeks," head men's tennis coach
Jonas Piibor said. "Tomorrow will be a big test for us both mentally and physically as each player will have to compete in two singles matches."
In doubles play,
Ruadhan O'Sullivan and
Sam Feit teamed up to advance to the finals of the Blue Doubles Draw while
Hunter Egger and
Kyle Everly advanced to the finals of the Red Doubles Draw. O'Sullivan and Feit opened the day with an 8-3 win over Utah's Gavelin and Parker and continued on with an 8-2 win over Portland's Pankin and Yoshida.
In the Red Doubles Draw, Egger and Everly opened the day with an 8-6 win over Montana State's Flink and Damgaard Qvist followed by an 8-7(7-4) battle against Utah's McCallie and Stoner to advance to the finals. The finals in each draw will be played on Sunday, Oct. 27.
In singles play, six of eight competing Zags advanced to the quarterfinals in their respective draws. O'Sullivan finished the day undefeated in both singles and doubles as he collected a 6-3, 6-4 win over MSU's Flink. Doubles partner Feit also kept an unblemished record with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Lucas Branco of Portland State.
The Gonzaga Invitational continues Saturday, Oct 26 at 8 a.m. at The Stevens Center.
