STANFORD, Calif. — Gonzaga women's tennis turned in a solid day in the opening rounds of the ITA Northwest Regional on Friday in Stanford, Calif.
Three doubles teams advanced to the Round of 32 on Saturday with a win, while three Zags singles players made it through the first two rounds of the 128-player main draw.
"I was extremely happy with how we competed today," head coach
D.J. Gurule said. "At times, we struggled to execute, but overall we have progressed from our previous tournaments. To have all three doubles teams and three singles players advance in the main draw is a testament to their hard work."
Gonzaga went 3-0 in doubles on the day with all three duos advancing to the Round of 32.
Cate Broerman and
Taylor Gruber took down Eastern Washington 8-3,
Tamara Anderson and
Haruna Tsuruta beat Portland 8-3, and
Kate Ketels and
Vlada Medvedcova capped off doubles play with an 8-4 win over San Jose State.
Ketels was fantastic in singles as well, dispatching ninth-seeded Erin Richardson of Cal 6-4, 6-3 before earning another straight-set 6-2, 6-4 win in the second round over Seattle U's Peggy Rooke.
Broerman, a freshman, got better as the day worn on, earning a 6-0, 6-4 singles win in the opening round. She then followed that up with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Nadine DelCarmen of Santa Clara in the second round.
Gruber also earned a pair of straight-set wins on the day to make it to the Round of 32. She defeated Sac State's Grace Dodd 6-2, 6-1, and then beat Liesl Peters of Saint Mary's 6-3, 6-3 to move on.
Medvedcova and Tsuruta each also had a singles win in the opening round before falling in the Round of 64. Medvedcova beat Pacific's Danielle Zamora 6-3, 6-1, while Tsuruta defeated Portland State's Jacinta Milenkoski 6-0, 6-0.
Gonzaga will compete in the second round of doubles and the third round of singles at the ITA Northwest Regionals, beginning at 8 a.m. at the Taube Tennis Center in Stanford, Calif.
