SPOKANE, Wash. — The Gonzaga men's tennis team won five of six first-round singles matches to highlight the first day of action at the three-day Gonzaga Invitational at the Stevens Center.
Freshmen
Matthew Hollingworth and
Brandon Park started out the day with wins in straight sets, followed by a three-set victory by
Bryan Husin. Fourth-seeded Hollingworth took down Montana State's Joaquin Espinoza 7-6(5), 6-3, and Park beat Seattle's Emilio Monroy 6-3, 6-2. Husin split the first two sets with Northern Colorado's Alex Exsted 6-2, 3-6, but came back to win the third 6-3.
Later in the morning,
Kyle Everly defeated Seattle's Colton Weeldreyer 6-3, 6-4, while third-seeded
Matthew Perkins defeated Manuel Monteiro of Montana State 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.
Then in doubles, the Zags earned a pair of first-round wins in its three matches. The duo of Everly and Park took down fourth-seeded Tom Pudney and Julian Kenzlers of Northern Colorado 8-6, while GU's third-seeded team of Hollingworth and
Simon Homedes Dualde beat Montana State's Christian Damgaard Qvist and Drew Brown 8-5.
Gonzaga also competed in the strong field at the Gopher Invitational at the University of Minnesota with a group of four Zags.
Eric Hadigian picked up a singles victory Northwestern's AJ Joshi in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.
