Women’s Tennis Advances at Cal Fall Invite

Freshman Broerman advanced to the semifinals

BERKELEY, Calif. – Gonzaga women's tennis moved on at the Cal Fall Invite on Saturday in Berkeley, Calif.

Freshman Cate Broerman led the way in singles, advancing to the semifinals of the Gold bracket, and the duo of Vlada Medvedcova and Katie Day advanced to the semifinals in doubles.

"We had a lot of good matches today against some tough teams," head coach DJ Gurule said. "Overall, we are headed in a good direction. We have to learn to compete for every point and stay focused throughout our matches, but I see a lot of improvement since the start of the year. Cate Broerman had a fantastic day and is showing a lot of maturity for her first tournament. We are excited for her future."

Broerman took a 7-6, 6-2 win over and opponent from UC Santa Barbara and then won by default in her second match. Haruna Tsuruta made it through to the quarterfinals in her bracket with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 win before falling in her second match.

In doubles, Medvedcova and Day advanced again with an 8-3 win. Broerman and Taylor Gruber also won a consolation doubles match to advance to the consolation finals of the Gold doubles bracket.

Gruber also grabbed a consolation singles win 6-4, 6-2.
