SPOKANE, Wash.- The Gonzaga men's tennis team swept Portland State 7-0 in Sunday's match inside the Stevens Center. The Bulldogs improve to 5-1 on the season with the sweep.
Â
The match started with the Zags taking an early lead in doubles, winning two courts and the third going unfinished. On court two,
Sasha Trkulja and
Leon Roider were first to finish, defeating Portland State's
Bryan Husin and Tommy Hsu 6-3. Court three's
Matthew Perkins and
Matthew Hollingworth came back from a slow start and won 7-5 to secure the Zags' doubles point. Court one went unfinished just as
Theo McDonald and
Oliver Andersson entered a tie break at 6-6 against Tommy Edwards and Matteo Fortini.
Â
"We came out a little flat in doubles," said Head Coach
Jonas Piibor. "I wasn't overly pleased with our focus during the doubles point."
Â
Fortunately, the Bulldog's power continued into their singles matches. Andersson was first to finish for the Zags on court four winning 6-1, 6-1 against Nikola Dimitrijeciv. Trkulja had great success against the Vikings' Tommy Edwards, defeating him 6-3, 6-2. At No. 1 singles Hollingworth was able to secure the win for the Zags, defeating Fortini 6-4, 6-3 and giving the team their fourth point of the match.
Â
While Gonzaga had already taken the match, all three remaining courts played their match out. Roider on court three was first to finish, winning 6-4, 6-2 against Hsu. Gonzaga's
Hunter Egger defeated Husin 7-5, 7-5 to get a win on court six.
Â
"It was a good team win," said Egger. "We are going to keep improving, as for now we're focused on getting ready for our matches this upcoming weekend."
Â
Pablo Gomez, on court five, lost his first set against Nils Plutat 2-6 but was able to come back and win the second set 6-4. Gomez pulled the win in the third set defeating Plutat 12-10 getting the Zags their seventh, and final point, of the match.
Â
"We got off to a good start in singles, and I think that set the energy for the rest of the match," Piibor said. "Portland State is a solid team and now are shifting our focus to practice on Tuesday. We are making sure we get a solid week of practice leading up to our next tough opponent Idaho State."
