LAKE NATOMA, Calif. – For the seventh straight season, the Gonzaga women's rowing team are West Coast Conference Champions.
The Bulldogs swept the competition, taking first in every race and finishing the day with 42 team points, tying the school record. Creighton took second with 32 points.
"We are so proud of this whole squad," head coach
Andrew Derrick said. "It is such a great group of women. Today was a great representation of the months of hard work they have all put in and we look forward to representing the WCC at the National Championships! Go Zags!"
The Zags started off the day with the 2V4 race, where the boat took first with a time of 7:51.0 as San Diego took second in 7:57.5.
In the second race of the day, GU took first in the Varsity 4 competition, with a time of 7:35.8. Creighton took second and finished in 7:51.0.
Gonzaga continued its dominance in the 2V8 race, placing first with a time of 7:01.4. LMU took second with a time of 7:07.5.
The Varsity 8 boat was the last race of the day and placed first with a finishing time of 6:47.3. Creighton placed second with a time of 6:53.5.
The WCC also gave out honors at the end of the regatta.
Katie Sierhuis received the Newcomer of the Year award and
Sailor Hawes was named the Coxswain of the Year.
Megan Chalfant was named a Co-Rower of the Year as well.
Four Zags were tabbed to the All-WCC First Team including,
Megan Chalfant,
Grace Dojan,
Hannah Cooney and
Katie Sierhuis.
Up Next: Gonzaga will travel to the NCAA Rowing Championships on May 27-29 at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Fla. The selection show will take place on Tuesday, May 17.
