Men’s Tennis Concludes Second Day at Wildcat Invite

The tournament concludes tomorrow

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Gonzaga men's tennis team competed this afternoon in the second day of the Wildcat Invite, producing a 2-1 record in doubles competition and a 2-4 record in singles matches.

All three doubles matches went down to the wire, with Gonzaga earning a pair of wins via tiebreaker. Jay Fairclough/Kai-Luca Ampaw outlasted Grand Canyon's Paolo Rosati/Jonathan De Silva 7-6 (0-4) and Gus Krauel/Tom Dunlop defeated New Mexico State's Ricardo Mercado/Henrik Lynum 7-6 (0-5), while Northern Arizona's Dani Torres/Jakub Pracher beat Giovanni Branchetti/Fabio Stapper 6-4.

Many of the singles matches were also hard-fought, with one of the losses including three sets and a tiebreaker. The two victories were Dunlop beating NMSU's Luc Fe D'Ostiani 6-3, 6-4 and Fairclough outlasting NMSU's Roko Stipetic 7-5, 7-5.

In the day's tightest singles match — and a battle of given names — NAU's Kai Mills survived against Kai-Luca Ampaw 6-7 (6-0), 7-6 (0-1), 7-5. Branchetti lost to Arizona's Filip Gustafsson 6-3, 6-0, Krauel was defeated 6-4, 6-2 by San Diego State's Paul Janson, and Stapper was stopped by UNLV's Illia Maksymchuk 6-3, 7-5.
