DAVIS, Calif. – The Gonzaga men's tennis team competed Friday on the opening day of the Aggie Invitational, producing a 3-3 record in doubles matches and a 4-2 record in singles competition.

For this tournament, doubles teams were separated into two brackets, either the Blue or White Draws. The opening match of the Blue Draw was hard fought, however Kai-Luca Ampaw/Fabio Stapper fell 8-7 (7-5). The pair's subsequent consolation match was also close, with Ampaw/Stapper coming up short 8-5.

In the Blue Draw's other round of 16 match, Giovanni Branchetti/Jay Fairclough won 8-4, then survived 8-7 (7-5) in the quarterfinals. Tom Dunlop/Oscar Rashed, in the White Draw, fell 8-3 in their opening round bout, then cruised to an 8-2 victory in a consolation match.

Singles competitors were separated into four brackets, including the White, Blue, Gold, and Grey Draws, with round of 16 matches on Friday. In the White Draw, Giovanni Branchetti overcame a three-set clash 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (7-4). Prevailing in the Blue Draw were both Kai-Luca Ampaw 7-6 (9-7), 6-3 and Jay Fairclough 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).

In the Gold Draw, both GU challengers had close matches, with Tom Dunlop falling 6-4, 6-4 and Fabio Stapper dropping his match 6-3, 7-5. Oscar Rashed coasted to a 6-2, 6-2 triumph in the Grey Draw.

Up next: GU will continue competing tomorrow and Sunday at the Aggie Invitational, hosted by the University of California, Davis. On Saturday, Branchetti/Fairclough will play in the doubles semifinals of the Blue Draw, while Branchetti, Ampaw, Fairclough, and Rashed will compete in the singles quarterfinals of their respective draws.

Singles semifinals and other consolation matches will also occur tomorrow, with finals on Sunday. Other schools competing include Nevada, Cal Poly, Saint Mary's, Pacific, Santa Clara, Sacramento State, William Jessup, and Cal., Berkeley.
