SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Gonzaga University's men's golf team shot a final-round 292 Tuesday and finished 12th at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic with a 54-hole score of 872.
Jason Azzarito shot an even-par 70 Tuesday over the 7,133-yard, par 70 Talking Stick Golf Course, North Course, for the best Bulldog round of the day, giving him a 54-hole score of 217 after Monday's rounds of 71-76. He tied for 28th.
Kevin Parkhurst shot a second straight 73 to go with an opening-round 72 for a 218 and a tie for 36th, and Kyle Huus, seeing his first competition since Feb. 23 because of a shoulder injury, finished at 220 and a tie for 48th with rounds of 68-74-78.
"We played alright for the most part," Gonzaga head coach Robert Gray said. "We had a couple of players struggle, but overall we're getting back to better consistency from most guys."
Gray said the day began calm, but by the second nine winds were steady at 20 mph with gusts to 30.
"With the conference tournament in a couple of weeks this was a good tune-up because the wind can blow at Hiddenbrooke Golf Course," Gray said.
The tournament was the final tune-up for the Bulldogs prior to the West Coast Conference Tournament April 19-20 at Hiddenbrooke Golf Course in Vallejo, Calif.
Tuesday's play began with the completion of the second round which was halted Monday by darkness, teams with anywhere from one-to-three holes to complete prior to starting the third round.
Cal State Northridge captured the team title with an 841, good for a 9-stroke victory over the University of San Diego.
Gunner Wiebe of USD claimed medalist honors with a 7-under par 203, shooting a final-round 66 after rounds of 67-70. He defeated Jeff Freund of CS Northridge by two shots.
