SEATTLE--Gonzaga's men's tennis team played its first dual match of the 2017 campaign Saturday, falling 7-0 to Utah State in a neutral-site matchup at the Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle.

Doubles play kicked off the match and the season, and Utah State prevailed in both bouts that finished. The Aggies won at No. 3 doubles as Ronzai Saurombe and Simon Homedes Dualde fell 6-1, and they clinched the doubles point as Ruadhan O'Sullivan and Sam Feit lost 6-3 atop the lineup.

In singles play, Saurombe battled with opponent Sergiu Bucur over half the match, forcing a first-set tiebreak. The Mutare, Zimbabwe native lost the race to seven points, however, dropping the initial frame 7-6. Bucur took the second 6-2 to end the individual contest.

Two freshmen won five games total in their first career dual matches. At No. 3 singles, Feit hung tough through the first set before falling to Jamie Barajas 6-4, 6-1, and Homedes Dualde bounced back in the second before Samuel Serrano ended the match with a 6-1, 6-4 scoreline.

Utah State clinched the dual with the first three singles matches to finish. At No. 6 singles, Kyle Everly fell 6-2, 6-0 to Jonas Maier, and those set scores were reversed for fellow freshman Vincent Rettke, who lost 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 2 slot. In the firsts singles slot, O'Sullivan bounced back from a 6-0 first-set loss to claim four games, falling by a break to Kai Wehnelt 6-4.

Gonzaga (0-1) will wrap up the first weekend of dual competition Sunday, Jan. 22, at Washington. That contest will begin at 12:00 p.m., again inside the Nordstrom Tennis Center on the UW campus. Links to live stats and live video for the match may be found at www.GoZags.com.
