SANTA CLARA, Calif.--The Gonzaga men's tennis team wrapped up its first West Coast Conference weekend of the season Sunday by claiming the doubles point but losing the dual 4-1 at Santa Clara.

The Bulldogs began the day with wins in two of the three doubles contests. Santa Clara won the first match to finish on court one, but Ronzai Saurombe and Simon Homedes Dualde evened the doubles competition with a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles. Those two lead the Zags with an 8-4 pairs mark on the year, all of which have come during the dual season.

At No. 2 doubles, Vincent Rettke and Kyle Everly clinched the doubles point. They downed the Broncos Robert Seby and Jesus Barajas by a similar 6-4 tally. The Zags' all-freshman duo also has eight wins on the year with six coming during duals. Their win Sunday clinched the Zags' ninth doubles point in the last 10 matches.

When singles play started, both teams claimed three first sets. Homedes Dualde, Ruadhan O'Sullivan, and Sam Feit each started their individual matches with a set win, and Santa Clara got first-set victories on courts two, four, and five. The Broncos then took the second frames of those matches for a 3-1 dual lead, and Feit fell in three sets 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 as Andrew Gu clinched the comeback win for the home team.

On court one, O'Sullivan trailed 5-6 in his second frame, and Homedes Dualde lost his second set 4-6. Both of those contests remained unfinished.

"This was two tough losses after winning the doubles point," said Gonzaga head coach Peter MacDonald. "Our doubles play has improved; we just need to step it up in singles."

With the loss, the Zags evened their record at 6-6 and fell to 0-2 in WCC play. They'll return to Spokane for a three-match homestand, their first of the conference season. That stretch will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 31, against San Diego.
