SPOKANE, Wash.-The Gonzaga men's tennis team faced its second ranked foe of the season Friday afternoon, claiming a point against No. 49 San Diego but falling 4-1 at The Stevens Center in Spokane.

"The guys battled really well," said Gonzaga head coach Peter MacDonald. "San Diego's a good team, and they got us today. I'm proud of the guys, they tried to play aggressive, and they came forward. We tried to do what we've been working on, San Diego just had the answers today and they got us."

Freshman Sam Feit picked up the Zags' point with a two-set win at No. 3 singles. He beat USD's Joshua Page by a break at 6-4 in the first set before claiming the second 6-2. It's the Los Angeles native's seventh dual victory, five of which have come at home.

San Diego clinched the match at No. 4 singles, where Ronzai Saurombe faced off against Guus Koevermans. The Torero took the first set 6-3, but Saurombe battled back in the second, forcing a set tiebreak. Koevermans edged Saurombe by two points in the tiebreak, winning it 8-6 and the match 6-3, 7-6 (6).

Two tightly-contested singles matches were left unfinished once the Toreros clinched the win. On court two, Vincent Rettke was tied 5-5 during his second set after dropping the first 5-7. Atop the singles lineup, Ruadhan O'Sullivan took nationally-ranked Filip Vittek to a tiebreak in the first set.

The Toreros also got points during doubles play and in the first two singles contests to finish. In the doubles contest, the Toreros claimed two doubles matches, winning 6-1 on court one and 6-3 on court two. On court three, Saurombe and Simon Homedes Dualde were a point away from tying their match at 4-all when USD clinched the doubles point.

San Diego then won singles matches 6-1, 6-1 on court six and 6-3, 6-3 on court five for a three-point lead.

The Bulldogs (6-7, 0-3 WCC) continue the homestand Saturday, April 1, with a match against BYU. That contest will begin at 12:00 p.m., again at The Stevens Center.
