Box Score IRVINE, Calif. — Gonzaga men's tennis battled UC Irvine to the very end, but came up short in a 4-3 loss on Monday afternoon in Irvine, Calif.
Gonzaga (8-4) got off to a good start on the day, winning the doubles point. But, UC Irvine (7-4) won the first set on four courts to set up the victory.
In doubles,
Sam Feit and
Ruadhan O'Sullivan set up the doubles point with a 6-4 victory on No. 1 after the Anteaters had won on No. 2. GU's
Simon Homedes Dualde and
Emilio Moreno then took the final two games to win 7-5 and clinch the point.
Despite UC winning the first set on four courts, O'Sullivan and Feit each won their second sets to square their matches. Meanwhile, the Zags and Anteates split the remaining courts. On No. 4,
Vincent Rettke won his match 6-2, 6-3, and Moreno earned a win on his court 6-2, 6-4 to make it 3-2.
In the third sets on Nos. 1 and 2, UCI was able to hold off the Gonzaga charge. Feit fell 6-2 in his deciding set, while O'Sullivan had tied his third set at 5-5, but ultimately went down 7-5.
Gonzaga will be back on the courts in Irvine, Calif., on Wednesday in a neutral site match against Navy. That match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
