CHENEY, Wash. – Gonzaga men's tennis turned in another strong effort at the EWU Fall Classic on Saturday in Cheney, Wash.
"We saw a better level today in singles from the guys," head coach
Jonas Piibor said. "In doubles, we are still not as aggressive as I want us to be yet, but we will get back to work next week on that. I am pleased with our energy level and the resiliency we showed this weekend. Our newcomers are adjusting well and keep improving. As we close the book on our first fall tournament, we have a lot of positives we can take from it moving forward."
In singles, six Zags collect two wins each on the day.
Sam Feit won his two matches in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2 and 7-5, 6-4 as one of three Zags that won both singles matches in straight sets. Freshman
Brandon Park won his two matches 6-3, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-3, while freshman
Oliver Andersson earned victories of 6-0, 6-3 and 6-4, 7-5.
Freshman
Matthew Hollingworth dropped his first set of the day, but battled back to win twice, 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 and 6-4, 6-4. Senior
Vincent Rettke won his first match in straight sets, 7-6(2), 6-3, and then a tiebreak third set in a 6-2, 2-6, (10-2) victory.
Simon Homedes Dualde collected two victories as well, 6-1, 6-0 to start the day and then earning a win due to retirement in his second match.
Five other Zags each collected one singles win on the day, including
Eric Hadigian,
Theo McDonald,
Bryan Husin,
Hunter Egger and
Matthew Perkins.
In doubles, the McDonald/Hollingworth duo earned the most dominating win of the day at 8-2. Park and Homedes Dualde won 8-3, and Hadigian and Everly combined on an 8-4 win. The GU pair of Husin and Perkins were victories in a tiebreak, 8-7(5).
Gonzaga will compete next in the ITA All-American Championships, beginning on Oct. 5 in Tulsa, Okla. Check GoZags.com for links to live coverage.
