Bulldog Classic Day One Results

SPOKANE, Wash.-The Gonzaga University men's tennis team saw a strong beginning to its own Bulldog Classic Friday as five individuals and a doubles pair stayed in main bracket contention at The Stevens Center.

In the A Singles flight, a pair of Bulldogs played second-round matches Friday. Sophomore Ruadhan O'Sullivan drew a bye into the round while his opponent, Idaho's Esteban Santibanez, played a match earlier in the day. O'Sullivan used his fresh legs to beat the Vandal in straight sets and advance to the quarterfinals on Saturday. Sam Feit, meanwhile, lost his second-rounder Friday after picking up a 6-3, 7-5 first-round win earlier in the afternoon.

Two more Bulldogs reached the second round of the top singles bracket as Vincent Rettke breezed past Ricardo Almeida in straight 6-1 sets and Simon Homedes Dualde downed his Eastern Washington foe 7-5, 6-2. Both will play their second-round matches Saturday.

In the B Singles draw, Emilio Moreno reached the quarterfinal after dispatching Seattle U's Matt Alderson 6-1, 6-1. The sophomore received a bye through to the second round, but Ronzai Saurombe played a first-round matchup, downing Tsubasa Yanagida of Eastern Washington by a similar 6-1, 6-1 tally. Saurombe then squared off against Montana's Max Korkh in the second round, winning 6-3, 6-1 for a ticket to the quarters.

The Zags began the day with two rounds of doubles contests. The experienced duo of Saurombe and Moreno started their tournament with an 8-5 win to reach the second round, where they drew up against Eastern Washington's top doubles pairing, Robert Dula and Scott Paz. The Bulldog duo hung tough, but Dula and Paz won by a single break at 8-6.

GU's other duo in the second round, Rettke and Kyle Everly, advanced to the quarters with a strong tiebreak comeback. The pair fought off six consecutive match points from Idaho's Lucas Coutinho and Esteban Santibanez, turning a 1-6 tiebreak score into a 7-7 draw. The two GU freshmen won the tiebreak 10-8 to advance into Saturday's quarterfinal round.

Gonzaga will resume play at its own Bulldog Classic Saturday, Oct. 29. Play gets underway at 8:00 a.m. inside The Stevens Center with the doubles bracket's quarterfinal round.
