Bulldog Classic Final Results
SPOKANE, Wash.-Sophomore Emilio Moreno picked up his first career bracket title Sunday as the Gonzaga men's tennis team wrapped up its own Bulldog Classic inside The Stevens Center.
Moreno dominated the B Singles flight, ceding no more than five games throughout the weekend. After breezing past the quarterfinals during the tournament's first two days, he posted 6-2, 6-3 wins over Portland's Jamie Fisher in the semis and Portland State's Tommy Edwards in the final Sunday to complete the run. Not only was this Moreno's first bracket title, it was his first appearance in a bracket final. His previous career best came in the season-opening EWU Fall Classic last month, where he reached the semifinal round.
Fellow sophomore Ruadhan O'Sullivan also competed in a main bracket final, falling in the A Singles championship to Portland State's Nathan Boniel. The first set of the title match went to a tiebreak, which Boniel came back to win 7-5. In the second, Boniel raced out to an early 3-0 lead and held on, taking the match 7-6 (5), 6-1. The loss was O'Sullivan's first ever inside The Stevens Center. Earlier in the day, the Cherrybrook, Australia native downed Portland's Carlos Donat in two sets to clinch a trip to the final.
Senior Ronzai Saurombe also played a semifinal contest Sunday. He faced Edwards in the B draw, losing 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
In doubles, the lone GU pair to play lost a tightly-contested consolation match. In the back draw's semifinals, Simon Homedes Dualde and Sam Feit squared off against Kooper Crow and Guilherme Scarpelli of Idaho, forcing an extra game but falling 7-5.
"I saw some great things in singles this week," said Gonzaga head coach Peter MacDonald. "Overall, we're doing a better job of coming forward to the net and looking to finish points. We're attacking second serves and looking to be offensive out of our first serves. All in all, I was real proud of the guys this weekend. There's a lot of good things that happened."
Gonzaga will conclude the fall season in two weeks with the Duck Invitational. That tournament will run Friday, Nov. 11 through Sunday, Nov. 13, in Eugene, Oregon.
