SPOKANE, Wash.--In the first home dual of the season, the Gonzaga men's tennis team put together a strong performance from start to finish en route to a 7-0 sweep over Eastern Washington, the program's first in 13 seasons.

"All in all, it was our first home match, and it was good to see our freshmen get their first dual match win. It's good to get that under their belts," said Gonzaga head coach Peter MacDonald. "Eastern came out and played pretty tough today. The guys just responded."

Gonzaga began their route to victory with the doubles point. They won all three pairs contests, the first one coming at No. 1 doubles where Ruadhan O'Sullivan and Sam Feit raced to a 6-2 win. Ronzai Saurombe and Simon Homedes Dualde clinched the point with a 6-4 victory at No. 3.

On the second doubles court, Vincent Rettke and Kyle Everly erased a four-game deficit and came from behind for a 7-5 win. It was all three pairs' first doubles wins of the dual season.

Rettke's hot play carried over into his singles match against Victor Pereira on court two. The freshman Bulldog doubled up Pereira in the first set and swept him in the second for the 6-3, 6-0 win. The Zags then went up 3-0 in the dual when Feit, another freshman, downed Scott Paz on court three. Feit swept the first set and took the second by a break at 6-4. The wins were both players' first collegiate dual victories.

Saurombe, the team's lone senior, clinched the match with a two-set victory at No. 4 singles. Facing Ricardo Almeida, Saurombe won 6-2, 6-4. It's his third against an Eastern Washington foe of the 2016-17 school year.

Atop the singles lineup, O'Sullivan squared off against the Eagles' Robert Dula, who's ranked No. 19 in the Northwest Region according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. O'Sullivan won a tightly-contested first set 7-5 before running away with the second by a tally of 6-3. The sophomore remained undefeated in dual play over his career inside The Stevens Center.

Two matches saw third set match tiebreaks Saturday: Homedes Dualde and No. 5 singles and Everly at No. 6. Everly won his elongated breaker by a tally of 11-9 while Homedes Dualde took his in regulation at 10-8.

The freshmen's wins capped off the sweep for Gonzaga, the first over Eastern Washington since the 2004 slate. The Zags have won the local rivalry's last five matches, dating back to the 2013 dual season.

"The guys, on the courts I saw, also did a good job on the extended points," said MacDonald. "They kept the ball deep and didn't give their opponents any unforced errors."

Gonzaga (1-2) will remain at home for its next match, a Feb. 4 contest against Idaho. That match will begin at noon, again in The Stevens Center.
