SPOKANE, Wash.--The Gonzaga University men's tennis team wrapped up a five-match homestand with a victory Friday, downing Air Force 6-1 at The Stevens Center in Spokane.
"I'm real proud of the guys tonight, they brought energy from the beginning until the end," said Gonzaga men's tennis head coach Peter MacDonald. "They raised their level of play from last night, too. It was a good day."
Gonzaga used a doubles sweep to create momentum in the later singles matches. In doubles play, Vincent Rettke and Kyle Everly got things going with a 6-3 win on court two. One position down, Ronzai Saurombe and Simon Homedes Dualde clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 victory over their foes, the Falcons' Mack Galvin and Matthew Ghering.
Atop the doubles lineup, Ruadhan O'Sullivan and Sam Feit completed the sweep with a tiebreak victory over Max Olson and Lucas Fumagalli. The Zag duo dominated the tiebreak period for a 7-6 (1) win.
In singles play, Feit once again won the first match that finished. Facing Isaac Perez, he prevailed in a tight first set 7-5 before taking a big lead in the second. The Los Angeles native finished that frame off at 6-1 for his third consecutive victory.
Up one court, at No. 2 singles, Rettke put the Zags on the brink of victory with a 6-4, 6-3 win. He also has won three straight singles matches, and Emilio Moreno used his second in a row to clinch the dual for Gonzaga. On court five, the sophomore swept his first set against Tadhg Collins 6-0, and he had to fight for every game in the second before prevailing 7-5.
Shortly after Moreno clinched the match, Everly added to the tally with a 6-4, 6-3 win on court six, and O'Sullivan also picked up his second win of the night, beating Olson once again at No. 1 singles. That match was tightly contested; O'Sullivan won the first 6-3, but Olson countered with a 6-7 (2) tiebreak win in set two. The two No. 1s went to a third set super tiebreak, which O'Sullivan won 10-5.
On court four, Saurombe also played a third set super tiebreak, this time falling to Galvin 10-5 in the extra frame.
With the win, Gonzaga ended a five-match homestand with a 4-1 record. The Bulldogs won all five doubles points over the stretch, and they picked up two 7-0 wins as well.
The Zags (4-3 overall) will now hit the road for three matches over Spring Break. Their trip to Southern California begins on Monday, March 13, with a 1:00 p.m. contest at UC Riverside. Gonzaga will also play matches at UC Santa Barbara and UC Irvine to round out the break and the non-conference schedule.
